TRAIL OVERVIEW

The value and versatility of the trails owned and managed by the Stark County Park District have grown significantly since 1997. After construction of the Ohio & Erie Canalway Towpath Trail began in August of 1996, Stark County voters approved a half-mill levy to support park development and create a Stark County Trail and Greenway Plan-a plan to create a system of trails and greenways to link cultural, historical, and recreational assets.

The long-term goal of the Stark County Trail and Greenway Plan is to develop trails that will reach into 17 townships, 14 villages, and 6 cities. An estimated 300 miles of trail will cover Stark County once the plan is fully implemented.

Today, the Stark County Park District manages nearly 60 miles of trail in Stark County, 25 of which are along the Ohio & Erie Canalway.

The trails are designed for many different purposes, such as hiking, bicycling, birding, horseback riding, and nature appreciation. Winter, summer, spring, or fall, the trails are available for your use and enjoyment!

TRAIL TIPS

Here are a few helpful tips to follow while preparing for your visit to the Stark Parks trails:

  • Dress for the weather.
  • Wear comfortable but sturdy shoes suitable for the distance of your hike and the surface of the trail.
  • Always bring drinking water. It will keep you cool and hydrated on hot summer days.
  • During the warm summer season, especially at dusk, wear bug/mosquito repellent.
  • Wear sunscreen in all seasons. The sun's rays may weaken during autumn and winter, but they can still cause damage.
  • Carry a small first aid kit with bandages, antibiotic ointment and cleaning wipes, especially on longer trips.
  • Bring a mobile phone on your trip in case of an emergency.

It is important for all trail visitors to be safe and courteous. We ask that everyone please follow these trail etiquette guidelines:

  • Horses always have the right of way. Approach slowly with extreme caution and give them as much room as possible. Ask the rider if you may pass.
  • Slower traffic should stay to the right. Pass only on the left when your line of vision is clear. Always announce your approach.
  • Always leave room for others to pass. Groups of three or more should ride in single file.
  • Be aware and cautious of area wildlife. Don't bother it!
  • Please do not leave anything behind on the trail. This includes empty food or water containers, articles of clothing, and animal waste.
  • Dogs are welcome on all of our trails; however, they must be on a leash, and you must pick up their waste.
