The Mt. Pleasant - Dogwood Park Trail is within Plain Township and North Canton.
Mt. Pleasant is an existing roadway and includes an underpass of Interstate 77. This
connection is recommended to be improved with bike lanes to provide a trail from Jackson
Township to the eastern areas of the county. This section traverses a somewhat dense
mixed-use area of both industrial and residential areas, but some greenway opportunities
remain.
A large-acreage family farm still in
operation just off Mt. Pleasant east of the Interstate stands out as a
welcome reminder of the area's heritage.
The conservation of a greenway and trail through this area will require a cooperative agreement with the private landowner. If the owner agrees, the greenway may strengthen the ability to maintain the property in its current use. This can be accomplished in several ways, including the transfer of development rights or the creation of conservation and recreation easements. These mechanisms would enable the landowner to realize full value from the land while maintaining continued operation.
From the farm,
an existing drainage ditch provides an additional opportunity for a small greenway connecting surrounding neighborhoods to the Northwood Elementary School and Hoover
High School. Another greenway
is feasible through the
grounds of the schools and a small creek channel. An alternate
roadway route through the residential neighborhood could provide a bike and walking
connection. This link would terminate at Dogwood Park, with the park serving as a neighborhood trailhead offering a connection to Jackson Community Park, Jackson Bog or on to the Canal Corridor. The proposed trail will be suited for pedestrians and bicycle riders.
