The 983rd Army Reserves (based in Monclova,
Ohio, near Toledo) spent a month in summer of 2000 turning the six-miles of the
abandoned railway along the west side of the Tuscarawas River in Canal Fulton into a
future trail for hiking, biking and horseback riding. The trail, which runs from 40
Corners Road to Canal Fulton, was cleared, leveled and the ground compacted. The section
between Canal Fulton and Butterbridge Road was paved with limestone. The trail will
be 20 feet wide with a 7 foot berm for horseback riders where topography permits.
The Army Reserves
worked on the trail on July 15th through August 11th. Parking areas were created at High
Mill and Cherry Streets to accommodate more than 100 cars. The Army Reserves also replaced
three 24 culverts and installed one 30 culvert. They also cleaned up a
residential dumpsite. Fencing will be installed along sections which are close to the
active rail line.
