SANDY & BEAVER CANAL TRAIL

The Sandy & Beaver Canal Trail would be within Sandy Township and Magnolia and Waynesburg.

SANDY & BEAVER CANAL TRAIL The Sandy & Beaver Canal Trail is an extensive trail and greenway opportunity in southeastern Stark County, and northeastern Carroll County. It includes sections of the historic Sandy Beaver Canal, Sandy Creek stream corridor and an abandoned rail corridor. It would be almost entirely off-road with the exception of sections within the small towns of the region. It would connect Magnolia, Waynesburg, Malvern and Minerva. Extensions of the trail could enter Tuscarawas County or eastern Stark County. This loop promises to be one of the highlights of the countywide system due to the picturesque quality of the countryside and towns. Magnolia has a variety of historic structures including a historic mill from 1834 that is still in operation. Additional buildings include residential structures and churches. A community park along the canal could be a primary trailhead. Waynesburg has a similar charm, featuring historic buildings and a picturesque setting along the Sandy Creek. Streetscape improvements within Waynesburg and Magnolia would enhance the route and stimulate revitalization of the commercial districts.

The proposed trail would continue along an abandoned rail line east of Waynesburg. An abandoned brick yard along the route stands as a dramatic reminder of the area’s industrial heritage. The plant was once one of the largest brick manufacturing plants in the country. The remains of the plant provide a wonderful opportunity for development of a public use park dedicated to the industrial heritage of the region. Such a resource has the potential to be a significant regional attraction.

East of the brickyard, the proposed route enters Carroll County. A single owner controls the rail right of way until it reaches Malvern. The owner has indicated a willingness to cooperate with public access for recreational trail uses. The Malvern section is believed to be within public ownership. Carroll County may want to pursue development of this historically significant route marked as the route of the Great Trail, an early Indian and pioneer route.

SANDY & BEAVER CANAL TRAIL The proposed trail will be suited for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians.
