Admission

The Congressman Ralph Regula Canalway Center is located in the Exploration Gateway at 5712 12th St. NW inside the north entrance of Sippo Lake in Canton.  The Canalway Center features 11 interactive displays designed to attract the tech-savvy younger generation and create pride in our local heritage and knowledge about how the canal of yesteryear influenced our county’s growth and success. The displays focus on canal history, business innovators in Stark County, and nature. A new Canalway Explorer program rewards participation in park programs, self guided activies, and other community events.  Free admission.  A special $1 per student rate is available for school groups. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult in the exhibit hall.

Interactive Displays

The interactive Orientation Station features a “rolling” list of activities and welcomes guests when they first enter.  At three log-in stations visitors will have their pictures taken and sign up to become “Canalway Explorers.” As they exit the exhibit, they will receive a personalized Canalway Explorer card with their photo. At future visits, they will get a discounted entrance fee by showing their Canalway Explorer card. Participation in other park events will be rewarded with points and additional collectible Explorer cards.

The next computed-assisted display lets guests pretend they are captaining a canal boat. That is followed by a display on the role of the railroad in the Canal’s decline. At the Innovation Station, guests learn what values have made Stark County businesses successful. Highlighted are the histories of three Stark County legends Henry and Tim Timken, Henry Belden, and Congressman Ralph Regula.
The next interactive display provides visitors with a virtual tour of the Canalway by bicycle, car, or railroad so they can plan their next visit.

Transitioning to the nature stewardship section of the Canalway Center, a “My Habitat” interactive display challenges guests to place wildlife in their appropriate habitats, and a water quality station shows them how Stark Parks tests water and why it’s important to do so. “My Lake,” provides insights into man’s role in maintaining a healthy lake.

At log-out stations, guests will receive their Canalway Explorer card with their personal website access code so they can keep track of their park activities and earn additional Explorer cards.
